South African Climate

When winter begins in the Northern Hemisphere, summer starts in South Africa. The South African climate is rather stable and even winter months (June to August) are comparatively warm and dry. The only exception is the Cape region that has a Mediterranean climate meaning that it receives the largest rainfall during the winter months.

The rest of country can be summarised as being almost tropical: short afternoon showers in summer and beautiful dry and crisp winter days when snow on the Drakensberg mountain peaks is not unheard of. During the summer months, temperatures throughout South Africa soar into the 30 degrees Celsius range. Although Cape Town is very dry between October and February, it can get very humid in the Kwa-Zulu Natal province which is flanked by the warm Indian Ocean.

Climate table

To provide you with a rough idea of what the weather really is like in South Africa, we've decided to include this useful weather table for 2002. Here you will be able to see what the average maximum and minimum temperatures were, how many rain days a region had and how much water came down.
